U.S. President Donald Trump has claimed in a television interview that Chinese President Xi Jinping has offered cooperation to help reduce tensions between Iran and the United States and to keep the vital waterway, the Strait of Hormuz, open.
According to Trump, the Chinese president expressed willingness that if any assistance is needed regarding Iran, China could play a role. He said China wants stability in the region because it imports a large quantity of oil from Iran, and regional tensions could also affect its economic needs.
Donald Trump further stated that China wants the Strait of Hormuz to remain open at all costs so that global energy supplies are not disrupted. According to him, the Chinese government supports a possible agreement between Iran and the United States.
Trump also claimed that China has indicated it will not provide military equipment to Iran, which is being seen as an important development in the regional balance of power. He added that economic relations between China and the United States are also improving, citing an agreement on the purchase of 200 Boeing aircraft as an example.
Earlier, speaking at a dinner held in his honor at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, Chinese President Xi Jinping had expressed commitment to further strengthening relations with Donald Trump. He said that the United States and China should move forward as partners rather than rivals.
The Chinese president emphasized that mutual respect and cooperation between the two countries are essential for global stability. He stated that improved relations between the world’s two largest economies would benefit not only both countries but also global peace.
Experts say that if the United States and China truly play a joint role in the Iran issue, it could lead to a significant shift in the geopolitical situation in the region, especially as efforts to reduce tensions in sensitive areas like the Strait of Hormuz could also impact global energy markets.
