Dangerous Hantavirus outbreak on Dutch cruise ship leaves 3 dead, passengers from 28 countries gripped by fear

A dangerous outbreak of Hantavirus aboard a Dutch cruise ship has triggered global concern after three people died from the virus, while several others were placed under medical observation. According to foreign media reports, nearly 150 passengers and crew members from 28 different countries were on board the vessel. Following the outbreak, the World Health Organization and relevant authorities immediately began reviewing the situation.

Reports state that dozens of passengers disembarked on Saint Helena Island on April 24, raising fears of possible international transmission of the virus. Health experts are now investigating whether infected individuals came into contact with others, while the remaining passengers on the ship are also undergoing screening.

World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in a statement that it would be premature to describe the current situation as the beginning of a global pandemic. He added that the organization is closely monitoring developments and coordinating with relevant countries to help contain the spread of the virus.

Medical experts say Hantavirus is usually transmitted to humans through rodents or their droppings. However, concern has increased after preliminary evidence in the recent incident suggested possible human-to-human transmission. The virus may spread through close and highly personal contact, prompting authorities to instruct infected individuals to isolate immediately and follow strict precautionary measures.

Authorities have started medical examinations of all passengers and crew members aboard the cruise ship, while health agencies in several countries have also issued alerts.
