North Korea stands firm again, refuses to join Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty

North Korea has once again rejected international pressure and refused to join the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). According to state media, North Korea made it clear that it will neither become a party to the treaty nor change its nuclear policy under any external pressure.

This stance emerged during the 11th NPT Review Conference held at the United Nations headquarters, where countries from around the world are discussing nuclear proliferation and global security issues. North Korea’s nuclear program was also discussed in detail during the conference.

North Korea’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Kim Song, stated that certain countries, particularly the United States, are spoiling the atmosphere of the conference and using the non-proliferation system for political purposes. He further said that North Korea is a nuclear power and this reality cannot be changed through any international pressure, resolution, or demand. According to him, the country’s defense strategy is completely sovereign and national security remains its top priority.

The statement also added that North Korea is not bound by any nuclear non-proliferation agreement and has no intention of joining it in the future. This announcement has created new complications in ongoing global arms control discussions.

International observers believe that North Korea’s stance poses a major challenge to global peace and nuclear non-proliferation efforts, as it may further increase tensions in the region. On the other hand, some countries argue that all states must come under a joint global framework to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons worldwide.
