OpenAI steps up business AI strategy with new deployment unit and Tomoro acquisition to drive large-scale adoption
OpenAI is investing billions of dollars into corporate artificial intelligence in order to increase revenue and expand its business from a wider perspective.
The ChatGPT company announced on Monday that it is establishing a new entity with more than $4 billion in initial investment to assist organizations in building and deploying AI systems. Additionally, it will acquire an AI consulting firm called Tomoro to quickly scale up this new unit.
After its early models resonated strongly with consumers, OpenAI has been working aggressively to sign corporate contracts and establish a significant presence in the business world where its AI can be deployed at large scale.
This venture, which will be majority owned and controlled by OpenAI, comes at a time when rival Anthropic is enjoying strong success in its enterprise AI push, with its Claude family of models seeing rapid adoption among businesses.
The new firm, named OpenAI Deployment Company, will help the ChatGPT maker embed engineers who specialize in frontier AI deployment into organizations. These engineers will then work closely with various teams to identify where AI can make the biggest impact, OpenAI stated.
The acquisition of Tomoro, a consulting firm that helps enterprises deploy AI, will bring approximately 150 experienced AI engineers and “deployment specialists” to the new unit from day one. According to its website, Tomoro was formed in 2023 in alliance with OpenAI and counts companies such as Mattel, Red Bull, Tesco, and Virgin Atlantic as its clients.
A news agency reported last week that the joint ventures OpenAI and Anthropic separately created with private equity firms are in talks to acquire service companies that help businesses deploy artificial intelligence.
OpenAI’s deployment unit is a multi-year committed partnership between OpenAI and 19 firms, with the partnership led by TPG, and Advent, Bain Capital, and Brookfield serving as co-lead founding partners, the ChatGPT maker said.
