Pakistan Begin Bangladesh Test Challenge as Two-Match Series Starts in Dhaka

Pakistan will face Bangladesh in a two-match Test series starting on Friday, 8 May, with the opening Test scheduled at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka from 8 to 12 May. The second Test will take place at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium from 16 to 20 May.

Both matches are part of the ICC World Test Championship 2025-27. Pakistan currently sit fifth in the standings after playing a two-Test home series against South Africa in October last year, where the hosts won the first Test by 93 runs and Pakistan claimed the second by eight wickets.

Bangladesh are placed eighth in the World Test Championship table following a 1-0 defeat in their two-Test series against Sri Lanka in June last year.

Pakistan last toured Bangladesh for a two-Test series in November-December 2021, winning 2-0. In total, the two teams have faced each other in 15 Test matches, with Pakistan winning 12, Bangladesh securing two victories, and one match ending in a draw.

Speaking at the pre-series press conference, captain Shan Masood said the team is fully focused on the series and aware of the challenge posed by Bangladesh in home conditions. He described Bangladesh as a highly competitive side with strength across all departments.

Masood added that Pakistan have selected a balanced squad capable of performing in both seam-friendly and spin-friendly conditions. He also highlighted the strong understanding between players and management, noting that many members of the coaching staff have played alongside the squad in the past.

He stressed that taking 20 wickets remains the key factor in Test cricket and expressed confidence in Pakistan’s bowling attack and overall team combination. According to Masood, consistent performances in batting, bowling, and fielding will be crucial for success in the series.

Pakistan’s 16-member squad includes Shan Masood (captain), Abdullah Fazal, Amad Butt, Azan Awais, Babar Azam, Hasan Ali, Imam-ul-Haq, Khurram Shahzad, Mohammad Abbas, Mohammad Rizwan (wk), Muhammad Ghazi Ghori (wk), Noman Ali, Sajid Khan, Salman Ali Agha, Saud Shakeel, and Shaheen Shah Afridi.

The team management features Naveed Akram Cheema as manager, Sarfaraz Ahmed as head coach, Asad Shafiq as batting coach, Umar Gul as bowling coach, and Abdul Saad as fielding coach, alongside the support staff.

Separately, the Pakistan Cricket Board also announced that Australia will tour Pakistan for a three-match ODI series as preparations continue for the 2027 World Cup.

Australia will arrive in Islamabad on May 23, with the first ODI scheduled for May 30 at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium. The remaining two matches will be played at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on June 2 and 4.

All matches will begin at 4:30 pm local time due to hot weather conditions. This will be Australia’s first bilateral ODI series in Pakistan since March-April 2022. Earlier this year, Pakistan defeated Australia 3-0 in a T20 series held in January and February.
